Troublesome Ticks

The identification and control of emerging infectious diseases is of great medical and veterinary importance around the world. About one fourth of the last pandemics have been associated with the spread of vector-borne pathogens. Ticks (Acari: Ixodida) transmit a greater variety of pathogenic microorganisms than any other arthropod group, and are among the most important vectors of disease affecting humans, livestock and companion animals, yet despite this there is little known about the pathogens ticks transmit to people, companion animals, and native wildlife in Australia. We have developed a molecular toolkit using the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platform by Life Technologies, Ion Torrent personal genome machine (PGM), to investigate the hypothesis that tick-borne pathogens are responsible for disease in humans and animals in Australia.
