The Genetics of the Magellanic Clouds

This project will study the interaction history of the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way, focusing on the identification of orbital models that lead to the formation of the gaseous structures observed in the Magellanic System, named the extensive gaseous Magellanic Stream and the Leading Arm. We will derive a sample of orbital models for the Clouds around the Milky Way by exploring the space of the parameters that drove the interaction mechanisms, such as the velocities and the masses of the clouds and those parameters related to the Milky Way potential. Using a new and novel technique that combines a genetic algorithm and N-Body hydrodynamic simulations, our approach allows for an automatic comparison between the simulation outcomes and the observed properties of the system.
