Coupled geologic simulations using MOOSE: understanding ore deposits and aiding mineral exploration

This project will focus on using Magnus’ capacity to drive the improvement of geological numerical simulations in order to advance our understanding of, and predict the signatures of ore deposits.  We will use MOOSE (Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment) and the module REDBACK (Rock mEchanics with Dissipative feedBACKs) to test the relative importance of deformation and heat transport in driving fluid flow and localising mineral deposits within the McArthur Basin of the Northern Territory.  The use of MOOSE-REDBACK on Magnus will allow us to carry out the large models required at sufficient resolution to include both km-scale and ore deposit-scale features.  Additionally the ability to run many smaller models quickly and/or simultaneously means that we will be able to test many more conceptual models and carry out comprehensive sensitivity analyses.
