A meeting of High Performance Computing (HPC) systems managers and administrators will be held at the Pawsey Supercomputing Facility in Perth on Wednesday 2nd August 2017.

The meeting will be held in juxtaposition with:

  • The PERTH HPC ADVISORY COUNCIL CONFERENCE, Monday 31 July – Tuesday 1 August. The conference is free of charge and attendees must register by July 10, 2017.
  • The third Spectrum Scale User Group (Australia) Meeting on 3rd-4th August. Registrations for this event are open https://goo.gl/UBofDZ

The previous meetings were at NCI on 31st May and 1st June 2016, and at the Bureau of Meteorology in April 2014.

The meeting is open to staff of government-funded HPC centres in Australia, including the Bureau, CSIRO, NCI, Pawsey, DTSG and Geosciences Australia.

Please note the confidential nature of the meeting and an acceptance of non-disclosure to be agreed to by attendees.  Attendees will need to undertake not to spread information disclosed beyond a ‘need to know basis’ within their workgroup.

The staff invited to the meeting need to be nominated by the managers of each centre.

The meeting will allow the exchange of ideas, in the hope that these will lead to improved service for users of the facilities, and improved efficiency of the HPC systems installation and operation.

The following presentations have been suggested:

  •             Planning for HPC acquisitions: making the case
  •             Models for resource allocation

There is an opportunity for further contributions: what new features or services is your site offering, or do you have new ways to streamline your activities?

Here is a list of topics of interest to HPC sites

  • Procurement strategies and processes
  • Benchmarking
  • Accelerators or not: are the applications ready?
  • Scheduling: responsiveness versus high utilisation, dealing with differing qualities of service, pre-emption, workflows
  • Managing storage: policies and implementation
  • Cloud
  • Containers
  • Burst buffers
  • Monitoring, warnings, trouble-shooting, reporting
  • Performance versus portability
  • Systems administration tools
  • Cyber security

There will no charge for attendance, but attendees will need to fund their own travel and accommodation.  Numbers will be limited to keep to a ‘workshop’ format.

A conference dinner will be held on the evening of Tuesday 1st August (prior to the meeting).

Please contact Rob Bell (Robert.Bell@csiro.au) for further information, and suggest topics for presentations and discussions that you would like to see included.

Attendees can register here (password required) once they have been nominated by the Director from their respective government-funded HPC centre.
