One more time Pawsey is opening its doors on Friday to meet with its users.

If you are a Pawsey researcher or intern, come and join us for the first of many PAWSEY FRIDAYS, community events aimed at bringing together researchers and the staff that has been supporting them at Pawsey.

The next Pawsey Friday will take place on Friday 27 July, from 3pm at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre.

The afternoon will provide an update on some of the projects run using Pawsey systems, but more importantly, the event will give you the opportunity to network and get to know both staff and users in a relaxed and informal setting.

This Pawsey Friday our special guests are Assoc Prof Paolo Raiteri and Prof Julian Gale from Curtin University.

Professor Gale is leading a team of researchers to uncover the secrets of the formation of crystals from ions in water processes.

Biomineralisation is one of the most important processes for mineral formation in the natural world – taking place in everything from coral reefs to bones, teeth and kidney stones in the human body. One of the most widespread of these minerals is calcium carbonate. Despite being so prevalent, relatively little is known about the formation of such minerals. Professor Julian Gale from Curtin University is leading a team of researchers trying to uncover the secrets of these common but little-understood processes.

During this session, Prof Julian Gale and Paolo Raiteri will demonstrate how computer simulation, based on the dynamics of ions in solution, has been used to provide both valuable insights and quantitative data for such processes.

This will be followed by a presentation by David Schibeci, Pawsey Head of Supercomputing who will give updates on Pawsey’s latest activities. Joining him will be Dr Aidan Hotan, from CSIRO,  providing an update on the Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)

A sundowner session will also take place where a selection of drinks and snacks will be available.

Next Pawsey Friday is taking place on Friday 28 September, this time showcasing the research of Dr Ivica Janekovic, a physical oceanographer with more than 15 years of experience in numerical modelling and ocean observing systems.

From Rottnest swim ocean forecasts to better prediction of tropical cyclones

Physical ocean modelling is relatively novel discipline within physical oceanography, having fully developed its potential in last 50 years. This talk will briefly cover numerical modelling in physical oceanography, influenced mainly with high-performance computer system development, leading to the development of the coastal near-real-time, high-resolution atmosphere-ocean coupled system for the western coast of Western Australia. Such a system can be used, for example, for Rottnest swim ocean-atmosphere forecasts or possible meteo-tsunami predictions. In the second part of the talk, more advanced applications utilizing hundreds of CPUs at Pawsey supercomputer used for ocean 4D variational data assimilation and development of a 2-way coupled system for atmosphere-ocean-waves will be presented. Preliminary results showing a better representation of tropical cyclone Olwyn in terms of path and intensity and more complete physical formulation will be discussed at the end.

These presentations will be followed by a brief Pawsey update from staff and Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) update by CSIRO staff.
