Presented by Anne Whiting.

EPCC have recently obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification and is in the process of preparing for ISO 27001:2013 certification.

As this is a significant investment mainly in EPCC staff time and effort, plus a modicum of external consultancy, careful consideration of the cost/benefit analysis was and is required. The objective was to establish processes and supporting infrastructure which delivered direct benefit to the user community and to facilitate continual improvement within EPCC rather than just to obtain the certification.

A key decision was the scope for both certifications, too wide and it risks being outside the area directly controlled by the organisation, too narrow and it becomes meaningless.

EPCC is heading towards its second annual ISO 9001 external audit, a point at which many organisations can lose their certification, having relaxed too much after the initial rush of activity to achieve it. It is a good point to reflect on the process to date and the benefits it has delivered.

The obligation to gain ISO 27001 certification has been driven by the data security requirements of the owners of the data sets held and processed by EPCC on their behalf. A GAP analysis has been carried out and work is underway with the aim of being ready for external certification audit in the summer of 2018.
