Aimed at more experienced programmers, three more sessions are offered to users who wish to develop, optimise and parallelise their codes on supercomputers.

  • Optimising Serial Code:  9:00am – 12:00pm Thurs 16 March
  • Parallelising your Code with OpenMP:  1:00pm – 4:00pm Thurs 16 March
  • Parallelising your Code with MPI: 9:00am – 4:00pm Fri 17 March

Courses are delivered in a face to face classroom style. Attendees are expected to bring and work on their own laptops. Staff from the Supercomputing Team will be facilitating so you can meet and chat with them.

Additional Information

  • Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops for the sessions.
  • Courses are free of charge and open to all, however places are limited.
  • Light refreshments will be provided on each day.
  • Lunch can be purchased at nearby cafeterias.

Morning Session March 20th – Roadshow

  • 10.30am Welcome by Pawsey staff
  • 10.40am Presentation from Pawsey researchers
  • Scramjet-based Access-to-Space, Dr Vincent Wheatley, The University of Queensland
    Reliable, reusable access-to-space systems have the potential to revolutionise the utilisation and exploration of space. A scramjet-powered, air-breathing second stage would have the mass budget for the thermal protection and flight systems required for reusability and rapid relaunch, which would complement the reusable first stages currently being tested internationally. We are addressing the remaining challenges to making these systems a reality through a combination of state-of-the-art numerical simulations, informed and validated by separately funded experimental research.
  • Supercomputing and Clean Energy, Debra Bernhardt, The University of QueenslandThe Bernhardt group has been using Pawsey since the beginning of 2016.  Access to Pawsey has enabled them to carry out molecular level computational studies, with an aim to provide insight into materials and chemicals for clean energy applications.  This project has focused on three technologies:  electrode materials for rechargeable batteries, hydrogen storage on two-dimensional materials and the promotion and inhibition of gas clathrate formation.

Morning Session March 22nd – Roadshow

  • 10.30am Welcome by Luc Betbeder-Matibet, Director Research Technology Services at University of New South Wales (UNSW)
  • 10.40am Presentation from Pawsey researchers 
    • Dr Karen Lee-Waddell – Astronomer CSIRO The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a brand-new telescope that utilises innovative technology to carry out wide-field astronomical observations with unprecedented survey speed, sensitivity and resolution.  The tremendous amount of data produced by ASKAP is a significant challenge for current computing capabilities. ASKAP recently started Early Science observations and although processing this data has been pushing the limits of Pawsey Supercomputing system, preliminary results are very promising.
    • Prof Sean Smith – Computational Chemistry UNSW In the coming decade, theory and modelling will harness massive advances in high-performance computing to enable an unprecedented acceleration in discovery and development of new materials for the energy, environment, health and IT sectors. I will overview selected programs in (i) discovery and development at the IMDC of the new “charge modulation electrocatalysis” technology and (ii) design of polymeric vectors for drug delivery. Both programs have benefitted enormously from the use of computing at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre.

    •  Quantum Chromodynamics and Supercomputing – Professor Derek Leinweber – The University of Adelaide
      Over the past 17 years, supercomputing performance, as measured by the TOP500 index, has grown at a rate of 1.8 per year.  This near doubling of performance year after year makes it essential to adopt the latest programming paradigms.  Equally important is the investment in high-performance supercomputing resources and the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre is a key component of the national strategy.  These investments keep Australians at the fore of internationally competitive fields in computational science, as opposed to enthusiastic spectators watching from the sidelines.  After a brief review of international, national and local trends, I will show how Pawsey supercomputing resources have revealed the origin of mass in our universe.  Through visualisations and animations, Prof Leinweber will illustrate the exotic structure of matter as determined from the first principles of quantum field theory.

The afternoon will give you the opportunity to network and get to know both staff and users in a relaxed and informal setting, while finding out more about researchers’ experiences with Pawsey systems and their outcomes.

This Pawsey Friday our special guest is Dr Selam Ahderom from Edith Cowan University.

Dr Selam Ahderom will be presenting on his project on Precision Agriculture and Throughput Computing on GPU’s.
Dr Selam’s fascinating project involves a weed detection system with an inbuilt camera passing over crops and taking thousands of photos. The images of plant species are compared to stored data on the system to identify the presence of weeds in a particular area. Dr Selam’s goal is to install the weed detecting system onto farm machinery that blanket-spray crops with herbicide. The technology will result in the reduction of herbicide use in crops significantly. Dr Selam and his team have been using the world-class facilities at Pawsey Supercomputing to store, share and process the vast amounts of data needed for the project.

It will be followed by a brief presentation from Pawsey staff on Pawsey system updates.

A sundowner session will also take place where a selection of drinks and snacks will be available.
