In June, Pawsey Supercomputing Centre will offer the following short courses on supercomputing, data and visualisation topics at the University of Queensland.

  • Introduction to Pawsey:  9:00 – 9:30am Wednesday 6 June
  • Introduction to Unix:  9:30 – 11:30am Wednesday 6 June
  • Introduction to pshell: 11:30 – 12:00pm Wednesday 6 June
  • Nimbus research and cloud training: 1:00pm – 4:00pm Wednesday 6 June
  • Introductory Supercomputing: 9:00am – 12:00pm Thursday 7 June
  • Intermediate Supercomputing: 1:00pm – 4:00pm Thursday 7 June

Courses are delivered in a face to face classroom style.

Attendees are expected to bring and work on their own laptops. Staff from the Supercomputing Team will be facilitating so you can meet and chat with them.

Additional Information

  • Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops for the sessions.
  • Courses are free of charge and open to all, however places are limited.

  • How to use Message Passing Interface (MPI) to parallelise your code for efficient processing on systems like Magnus
  • Modify your code to perform simulations on previously unavailable scale,
  • Understand how the code you are using was parallelised with MPI

Hourly Schedule

The course is organised over one week in three 90min webinar sessions.

  1. Webinar Session 1 (90 min): Introduction and Point-to-Point Communication
    Exercise 1 (approx. 30 min): Ping-Pong
  2. Session 2 (90 min): Non-blocking Communication and Communicators
    Exercise 2 (approx. 45 min): Message in a Ring
  3. Session 3 (90 min): Collectives, overview of other topics and next steps
    Exercise 3 (approx. 90 min): Game of Life

Each session ends with an exercise to be completed individually on the Magnus supercomputer before the next meeting.

In cases of any problems with the exercises, you will be able to contact Pawsey Supercomputing Specialists via a messaging app or email.

Magnus training accounts will be available for the duration of the course.

First held in 1986, ISC High Performance is the world’s oldest and Europe’s most important conference and networking event for the HPC community. It offers a strong five-day technical program focusing on HPC technological development and its application in scientific fields, as well as its adoption in commercial environments. ISC High Performance attracts engineers, IT specialists, system developers, vendors, scientists, researchers, students, journalists, and other members of the HPC global community. The exhibition draws decision-makers from automotive, finance, defense, aeronautical, gas & oil, banking, pharmaceutical and other industries, as well those providing hardware, software and services for the HPC community.

Pawsey will one more time join this prestigious conference. The Centre will be hosting a booth as part of their exhibition where Australia’s science will be showcased. Exhibitor from 25 countries and every facet of the HPC community will be there.

Pawsey staff together will representatives from other Supercomputing Centres, have organised a Birds of a Feather: HPC Education: Widening Participation and Increasing Skills through Contests, Challenges and Extra Curricular Learning. The session will take place on Tuesday, June 26th3: 45 pm – 4:45 pm at the Analog 1, 2 room.

Come and visit us in the booth L-410 and get to see how Pawsey has been accelerating researchers’ outcomes in Australia and its role in the Square Kilometer Array.
